Agape Network appeals for donationsRev. Bonnie Ott
By Glenn Gullickson

The Agape Network is appealing for financial donations to help the non-profit organization, which provides food boxes for people living with HIV/AIDS.

In a letter to the community for asking assistance, the Rev. Bonnie Ott, Agape’s CEO, said corporate grants and donations have diminished over the past year causing the organization to reduce its expenses.

“Agape Network is struggling financially and we need your help,” Ott said in the letter. “Our funding has become increasingly dependent on donations from individuals.”

Agape has been providing food boxes for people living with HIV/AIDS in the Phoenix metropolitan area since 1988. More than 300 food boxes are provided each month for people who cannot afford to buy food, Ott said.

The organization’s main source of funds is a Ryan White grant, which goes to pay for food, but funds are needed for rent, utilities and building maintenance, Ott said in a telephone interview.

Without better funding, the possibility of closing Agape is “very real,” Ott said. “We would do anything to stop that. These clients are like our family to us.”

Ott said that Agape is looking for another venue that would accommodate the organization.

“We’ve cut everything we possibly can.” Ott said. “We’re not proud this is happening. We’re just admitting we need help.”

Ott said that since she issued the letter, a couple of small fundraising events have been organized. She would be interested in talking with anyone who is interested in organizing an event to raise funds for Agape.

Donations can be made online at the organization’s Web site at www.agapenetwork1.org or by mail to Agape Network, 2425 E. Thomas Ave., Phoenix, AZ. 85016. Contributions are tax deductible.

Agape distributes food boxes that follow nutritional guidelines on the first and third Fridays of the month.

Ott said the organization would also accept donations of food and plastic grocery bags.
